Blessed with the support
from Kampong Chai Chee Community Centre Management Committee and South
East CDC Outstanding Programme Fund, members from Kampong Chai Chee
Community Centre Daiko (KCC Daiko) spent 6 fruitful days learning from
dedicated teachers of the Kantou Abaredaiko group in Tokyo,
Japan. From 13th to 19th of May 2003, members
engaged in rigorous training, which involved learning drumming
techniques and new rhythms. Despite the short time span, members
managed to adjust to the differences in drumming positions and marked
improvements emerged over the next few days. After grueling practices,
the Singaporean drummers participated in a joint performance with
their Japanese teachers in a social event at Yokohama. The rousing
beats of the drums brought much cheer and smiles to the audience, most
of whom had physical disabilities.
Over the
weekend, KCC Daiko group had an opportunity for close cultural
exchange with Japanese members from the Kamieki Daiko group in
Yokohama during their practice sessions. Unlike conventional taiko
groups, Kamieki Daiko welcomes people from all walks of life,
enabling children with mental deficiencies to seek enjoyment through
drums. Against cultural differences and language barriers, members
from both groups bonded over repeated drumbeats and a shared passion
for taiko. After the practice, a Kamieki Daiko member, Mr
Higuchi, treated the Singaporeans to a home visit. They spent a lovely
evening sipping tea and indulging in exquisite snacks in a traditional
Japanese setting, complete with a view of the Higuchi’s manicured
gardens.
This
learning trip has been tremendously beneficial towards the growth of
KCC Daiko as they were able to learn about taiko in its place of
origin. Members were also taught how to improvise on current
melodies and blending in with other percussion, besides the various
drumming techniques. Beyond the technicalities, it was a golden
opportunity for members to establish social networks and cultural
understanding over a familiar drumbeat.
KCC Daiko
would like to take this opportunity to extend their utmost gratitude
to Mr. Toh Weng Cheong, JP, BBM(L) and Mr. Hiroshi Kimura for
initiating and making this exchange programme possible. |
